In the UK, we have a rich heritage of social enterprises. A lot of them were started by Quaker families (The likes of Cadbury’s, Carr’s, Clarks, Jacob’s, Fry & Sons, Rowntree’s, Barclays Bank, Lloyds Bank)
So what can we learn from them?
ONE: SIMPLICITY. Quaker businesses opposed excess and waste.
If you think about it, this is great operational practice. Most of the clients I work with focus a lot on reducing waste and making resource efficiencies, especially with their input materials and packaging. This, in turn, improves their profitability to be able to re-invest in the business, their people and the planet.
TWO: REPUTATION. Many believe the Quakers’ reputation for honesty and fair dealing led to their success in business.
This is something that you, as a business owner can implement through initiatives like:
- choosing quality input materials that are sustainably sourced,
- screening your suppliers to make sure they are looking after their people and the planet,
- having a quality customer service strategy in place where you regularly listen to their feedback and take action on it
- being transparent about your business finances, strategy and operational decisions with staff
THREE: RESPECT. Quaker businesses have a long tradition of respect for all those working with them, treating them as equals.
In the past, this took the form of providing decent housing, education for workers and their families, anti-slavery campaigns, giving pensions and minimum wages.
Providing housing for your staff might be a bit of a push nowadays, but providing them with:
- Professional development opportunities
- A decent pension, with an ethical investing option
- And a Living Wage
- Time for health & wellness activities
Are still excellent ways to treat your workers with respect and maintain a healthy and happy workforce.
