What is a B Corp?
B Corp Certification is a third-party holistic certification founded by B Lab to prove that a business is socially and environmentally responsible.
It was created in 2006 to assess all areas of a business, showing that People and Planet are just as important as Profit.
B Corp Certification doesn’t just evaluate a product or service; it assesses the overall positive impact of the company that stands behind it.
It has grown beyond a certification into a global movement to change the system away from unfair capitalism to a fairer capitalist system, where businesses can be a force for good.
B Corps think about how their business will benefit all stakeholders in the ecosystem, which results in better choices, better outcomes and systemic impact, rather than only focusing on shareholder profits.
Stakeholders include your workers, your customers, your local community, charities, suppliers as well as the environment.
Who is B Corp certification for? (Is it right for my business?)
Only for-profit businesses can certify as B Corp, as B Lab’s vision is to transform the capitalist system away from unfair capitalism to a fairer capitalist system. Not-for-profits and government organisations cannot certify, however, any type of organisation can use the B Corp framework for free to baseline their social and environmental performance and use it as an improvement roadmap.
Specific businesses which B Corp might be right for include:
- Businesses who have already committed to creating a positive environmental and social impact
- Businesses looking for a way to formalise that commitment with a third-party certification
- Businesses that are looking for a way to improve on their social and environmental performance and would like a holistic roadmap that shows them how to embed it into every area of the business
The B Corp community has been growing rapidly since its inception in 2006, and it only keeps on growing, there are now over 10,000 B Corps worldwide, in 105 countries and 160 industries.
The UK B Corp community includes over 2,500 certified B Corps, the majority of whom are micro and small businesses.
